Nite Kite Flying

Bernice came back from her Sydney business trip today. She was eagerly looking forward to this evening as prior to her trip, we had bought a 2.7m LED kite for night flying.

As evening came, we brought along the folded kite and accessories to West Coast, first to settle our dinner, and then adjorned across the highway to the West Coast Park. There were still quite a lot of day kites flying in the sunset sky.

After we found a comfortable spot, KT proceeded to unload the barang-barang...

...and assemble the kite.

Here's KT with the disc-brake reel system that allows better control of the kite...

...of course, being a first-timer was not without it's problem. Somehow the kevlar thread got entangled in the disc-brake and KT had to figure out how to undo the mess. Fortunately, help was available nearby when a kite vendor by the name of Ricky (from Typhoon Kites) who sets up his make shift stall every weekend, came to the rescue after a boy Bernice approached for assistance with his head light alert him of our predicament.

Within minutes the pair managed to resolve the problem - a wrong thread run on the reel system by the vendor (Passion Kites) we bought our kite from resulted in much unnecessary frustration. Ricky graciously rectified the problem.

Ricky and the boy (Andi) then proceeded to show us how to fly the 2.7m kite, and how to control the reel system so the thread do not get entangled again. Before long, we were enjoying ourselves sitting on the yoga mat and taking turns controlling the kite...

As night grew, we reeled back the kite and packed up for home.

It was quite a humbling experience, but we certainly learned a great deal about this night version of the favourite past-time of the kampong era. You can be sure we will be back, and perhaps bringing along our nephews and nieces (and even our neighbours along) to share the joy of flying nite kites.
